La Belle Province’s power story has been decisively shaped over the past decades by its enormous hydrological potential and its dominant utility, Hydro-Québec. Having developed one of the strongest hydropower knowledge-bases in the world, Québec has recently embarked on a journey to diversify its energy mix with wind power, harnessing Gaspésie’s eolic potential. Now, with a plentiful annual production of 40,000 MW in sight, and an energy surplus to last until 2027, Québec must look outwards. Moving ahead, the challenges for both wind and hydro power players alike will be to continue their innovation in new, external markets, which could benefit from their accumulated expertise.
